Recognition

As last week was an eventful one at my internship, my patience ran out as I had a task that seemed too overwhelming at the time. Writing a whole entire newsletter for a large amount of people in the community was already a stressful job and to have it finished in less than a day seemed a little more than stressful but rather difficult and demanding. As I mentally overloaded myself all day, I finally finished the newsletter with a sigh of relief, but still felt under-appreciated for all the work I put in. As the weekend past and I received no recognition for finishing the job I just accepted the fact I wouldn't be recognized and let it go.

In class we discussed emotional intelligence, a skill that allows one to recognize their own feelings as well as others to, overall, best manage. It takes attention, memory and skill but I also realized the whole team, or group of employees, from intern to manager, has to each have emotional intelligence of some sort to successfully run. Everyone has different personalities, sense of humors, intelligence, and skills and in order to best work with one another they need to see the best of each person and appreciate them. I knew that my boss was busy and stressed out with much more than my little newsletter incident so I quickly accepted it and moved on to the other tasks I was given, but the next day after our class on emotional intelligence I had received an e-mail saying thank you for all the work I put in and it was greatly appreciated and necessary for the organization. That one sentence made me forget about the whole day, from running around in stress and panic trying to finish the task, but made me want to do the many more newsletters to come without fear knowing that I was supported and recognized and I was essential to building a better community and helping the organization. After all, I think everyone wants to feel that they are important in their own way to their job.
