Working at my internship is not at as hard as I had expected it to be. The office is very laid back and very open and everyone makes sure to have fun throughout the day. People will be playing catch, running around with new announcement, or playing bingo. They do these things to make sure you do not stay bored and tired sitting at your desk from 9-5 everyday, and it works. All the employees are extremely nice and motivate each other to do good and applaud every time someone places a student into a new host family home. The upbeat atmosphere and encouragement have made the adjustment into the office very easy for me.
I have been at my internship for two weeks now and have an assigned job I do when I am there. My first day I had to take an online qualification exam this gave me permission to look at student files and to be able to help in the placement process. It is a test that employees must take once a year to ensure everyone is up to date on protocol and safety precautions. Since then I have been given the job of making the Camper of the Week email. The email consist of 16 students who have been chosen to be spotlighted for the week and has their picture, name, age, where they are from, and a small description about them and what they like to do and why they want to become an exchange student. The email goes out to about 700 families and is a large impact on a many students being able to find a host family.
So far at my internship I have already begun to learn a lot about myself. I learned that I do not mind such an office setting and I enjoy how team motivated the company seems to be. I do however get antsy sitting at a desk staring at a computer for hours on end and don’t know if this is a task I want to make a career out of. I’m glad I am figuring this out during my internship because for some time I thought it could be the job I would want after college. I am now realizing I want to try and branch off to be a more hands- on active employee. I’m hoping in the future at my internship I am given more opportunities to grow and learn. My supervisor and me have talked about me having “shadowing” days where I am going to be allowed into any section of the company and shadow someone for a day so I am able to see what different jobs are like I may be interested in. Hopefully, this will give me a better idea of the different option and setting within a company.
