Blog #9 Working Hard, Met Matt Damon's Nephew

Last week was so exhausting, especially on Wednesday. I sat for three hours and folded two-hundred brochures- one by one. Talk about manual labor! Ugh! Well...at least it was for a good cause. The city of Cambridge and the school will be holding a City Marathon (walk and run) next month. They are planning to donate all proceeds to the high school as well as to charity. So I spent a lot of time designing the brochure and making sure they were folded neatly. Although I took breaks in between, I disliked the fact that I had to get them all done in one day. I would of preferred if I was given fifty a day to prepare and fold. I don't want to sound like a cry baby but my shoulders, my neck, and my back were aching very badly from being seated for so long. There were times when I would get up occasionally and did some stretches. Ok, enough of the complaining. Other than that, something interesting that happened this week was that I found out the actor Matt Damon- his nephew goes to the school. While I was paying attention to my folding, in came a freshman asking if it was too late to sign up for baseball. I realized his last name was Damon but didn't think anything of it. Then in came my supervisor and the secretary, “Oh hi Jack! I see you met Saffie!” (All excited) “Saffie do you know who this is!” I noticed that when he came, it seemed like everyone instantly stopped what they were doing. I thought it was funny but didn't think it was a big deal. I don't think he should be treated differently from the other kids JUST BECAUSE he's a celebrity's nephew. I sensed that everyone was acting EXTRA nice to him- their approach was very different from dealing with the other student-athletes. For example, although the deadline for sign-up sessions had already passed, the office team (coaches, secretary, athletic director) did everything they could to try to fit him in. But when another student wanted to sign up, he or she was automatically told that it was too late and that they would have to wait until the Fall to join a sport. Tsk, Tsk. But overall it was a good week and that was the highlight of it.
